We know that the sea is rising, but we do not know how fast it will happen and how extensive it will be. A landscape is in constant change, but often it happens so slowly that we hardly notice it. We notice it when extreme events occur, causing floods, erosion, or landslides. Sweden has so far experienced a seeming lowering of the sea level due to land uplift after the last glaciation, especially in central and northern Sweden. But now the sea is indeed rising, and land is gradually becoming water.
How should society adapt as sea levels rise? Which values need to be protected? Can the shoreline remain, just higher up? Can something be left or moved, or are there flexible solutions that can change over time?
With the research project COALA, we are exploring the possibilities of flexible land use in areas that, in the longer perspective, will end up underwater or be flooded during storms.
During the weekend of July 1-2, researchers Lisa and Gunnel will be at the Konstkiosken. Come and talk to us and share your ideas for an attractive Kalmar by the water as the sea rises.
