Vernissage: In the Light of the Bench Cross

The exhibition I benkrossens ljus highlights the intangible, site-specific cultural heritage in Algutsboda, a place in the heart of Småland's Glass Kingdom.

How did people practice agriculture, refine, and sustain themselves in the past? What have the agricultural practices of the place looked like? What kinds of cultivation methods existed? And how can the historical, sometimes forgotten, knowledge of this intangible cultural heritage be utilized in the present?

In tribute to the work and the stories that historically and in the present carry forward the knowledge of local history societies' historic agricultural artifacts, the artist Anna-Linda Gabriel presents a series of photo dioramas with light glass installations from the Algutsboda local history society’s agricultural museum. The opalescent glass has been produced by refining old moose bones that Anna-Linda has gathered and received, found in the forests of the local area. The bones have been crushed into flour which has further been included as an ingredient in the glass production. Just as it has been done for a long time in the region where bone meal has been used for glass production and soil improvement of the poor land. The glass mass has been mixed and melted at The Glass Factory (together with Peter Kuchinke) and builds upon experiences of bone meal-based glass produced in collaboration with Ella Einhell.

Vernissage Saturday, September 28, from 14:00 to 16:00 at Galleri Magic Photo (Funkabotorget 1B, Kalmar). After the vernissage on September 28, open on Fridays and Saturdays + by agreement. Until Sunday, October 20.
