John Sunderland is an Irish based visual artist and archaeologist.
He has developed a hybrid practice using methods from both disciplines to consider contemporary issues around marginalised and contested environments. He studied Documentary photography (M.A.) at the University of Wales, Newport (2006) and a practice- based Phd (2014) into the visual interpretation of landscape change at the University of Northampton, UK. In 2019, he was artist in residence at The Glass Factory, Boda, Småland, resulting in the exhibition Touching Darkness. Recent projects include Touching Time (2020-23) a residency and exhibition based on the embodied archaeological processes of excavation. He was also a commissioned artist on the EU funded Ancient Connections project (2021-23) investigating links between S.E. Ireland and S.W. Wales through a contemporary pilgrimage. He uses a variety of media, including cartography, photography, installation, and glass sculpture.
