In Kerstin Björk's work, embroidery emerges without predetermined goals, through a partially automatic approach. With the thread, she attempts to capture thoughts and mysteries while simultaneously creating her own. It is about exploring and shaping nature and nature magic, and also about an underlying awareness of the prevailing climate changes. It reflects humanity's ability to exploit rather than to become a part of the Earth's resources.
Kerstin Björk b. 1980. Lives and works in Småland. She works with embroidery as image and concept. The embroidery takes shape without predetermined goals, using a partially automatic approach. With the thread, she attempts to capture thoughts and mysteries while simultaneously creating her own. Nature and the environment have a strong presence in her artistic practice and daily life. It is about exploring and depicting nature and the magic of nature, as well as an underlying awareness of the ongoing climate changes. It addresses humanity's capacity to exploit rather than become part of the earth's resources. The embroidery has, with this background, developed into components in objects and installations alongside materials such as branches, roots, and other found items. Björk has an MFA from HDK Textile Art.
